Stitching on the Road

Today we had a nice surprise when Betty Burnett, whose calling card says “Home Motor For Real,” stopped by the AQS office. She shared some of the projects she’s made from American Quilter magazine. So we dropped in to the AQS photography studio and had our photographer Charley Lynch snap a couple of photos of Betty and her work.

Betty is a member of RVing Women and was in town to set up a camping spot for her group to visit the Paducah Quilt Show in April. She and her compatriots travel around in their RV’s and stitch as they go.

In the photo at right, Betty shows off the quilt she made from the article, “Nature’s Way: Rust Dyeing,” by Beth Wheeler in the January 2010  issue of American Quilter magazine. Betty’s quilt is titled, Rusted Andrika (symbol in the center means Tree of Life).

It’s always fun to talk to someone who has played with a technique. From Betty, I learned that timing is the key to having your fabric light or dark – the more time you wait, the darker the rust color becomes. She enjoyed this technique so much that she made 56 T-shirts, similar to the one she’s wearing, for gifts. I would say that Betty had fun with this technique!

Then she tried a different foundation piecing technique. On page 86 of the November 2009 issue of AQ, Kathy Downie shared her quilt, “Autumn Canopy,” and the no-tear method of foundation piecing where the seams joining fabric patches are not stitched through the foundation. Betty has a good start on her quilt and hopes to finish it for a friend this winter.

What projects have you been making from the American Quilter magazine? It’s a good place to look for techniques and inspiration for your projects.

The dates for the AQS Quilt Show in Paducah are April 24 – 27, 2013. Now is the time to secure your lodging for the Paducah show. Visit www.paducah.travel for information on lodging. Click on Quilt Show at the top of the page, and then Accommodations for a complete listing of hotels, campgrounds, and other lodging in the area.
