As we get closer to our AQS Quilt Show and Contest – Des Moines, we want to tell you more about our fantastic instructors who will be teaching. The show runs Wednesday, September 28, through Saturday, October 1. A questionnaire was sent to all 23 instructors. Today, we meet Penny Haren.
Penny grew up with quilts so they were always part of her life. She remembers having the measles as a child and counting the pieces in a double wedding ring quilt that her grandmother had for her bed. Penny was fascinated with the concept of cutting fabric and sewing pieces together to create rings.
Penny likes the math of a quilt and figuring how to make difficult blocks look easy. Her studio is in her master bedroom. Penny says she decided she needed more room to sew, so she moved to a smaller bedroom and turned the master into a sewing suite.
In her spare time, Penny likes to read and meet friends for a glass of wine. She also has five children, two daughters-in-law, and four grandchildren. They play games together and enjoy family dinners. The whole family has Kindles so they read the same book at the same time and enjoy “family” book club.
