How many times have you used your sewing machine and only used either the straight stitch or the zigzag stitch? Sometimes we need a jump start to learn how to use the decorative stitches that are built into many of today’s home sewing machines, or how to use all of those feet that come with a machine. We have two great classes at the AQS Quilt Show in Grand Rapids that will expand your knowledge in using your machine.
LuAnn Hartly and Carol McKinney will be sharing many different ways to use a variety of features on a home sewing machine. These knowledgeable educators will teach techniques that can be used on Janome machines (which we will use in class) and other brands of machines with decorative stitches.
LuAnn is teaching Victorian Romance where you’ll learn how to couch cords and ribbons, then add pin-tucks to add texture and detail to your project. This class is Saturday morning, 8:30 – 11:30 a.m. There will be a kit ($20) that includes the fabric, stabilizer, and ribbon. The sewing machines and irons are provided for you. All you need to bring to class is some perle cotton, embroidery threads, and 5 yards of ribbon in assorted sizes 1/4″ to 1/8″. Cut your learning curve down by learning from a professional in using the home sewing machine.
Carol McKinney is teaching Monochromatic Glamour, also from 8:30 – 11:30 a.m. on Saturday. You’ll get to learn some different techniques in this class – gathers, diamond tucks, and even how to use eyelets in an interesting embellishment. The $20 kit includes fabric, ribbon, and mesh stabilizer. The sewing machines and irons are provided for you. All you’ll need to bring to class is a yarn needle, ruler, water-soluble fabric marker/chalk, a seam ripper, and scissors. If you’ve ever smocked by hand, you’ll love learning this technique using your sewing machine.
